One rockin' night

Have you ever just cranked the music and watched your kids dance around and attempt to play instruments? They are just sure that what they are "playing" sounds exactly like the song. So that's what we did tonight...man...Saturday nights take on a WHOLE new meaning when you have kids:)
Maebree has her rockstar face on.....

25 Random Things About Me

So Facebook has this going around and I thought it would be fun to also include this in my blog as well. None of these are extremely serious or spiritual because I am just not into putting my mushy/gushy feelings out there:o), but I am certainly a fan of all things random. Here goes!

In NO particular order and completely off the top of my head:
25.) I love coffee. Two creams, Two sweeteners please!
24.) I am extremely, easily annoyed. Top of my list these days? Disrespectful teenagers whose mommies and daddies give them anything and everything they want.
23.) I have fallen into every job I have had. And it's always worked out really well.
22.) I really wanted a son, and God chose to bless me with three girls. He really does have a sense of humor, doesn't he?
21.) I vowed my kids would never have a mullet. I've yet to cut Maebree's because it's taken her 2 years to grow the little amount of hair that she has. She is STILL called a "he" most days.
20.) I love good smells and am obsessed with my house smelling nice. It doesn't have to be clean necessarily, just has to "smell" clean.
19.) I love firefighters. Good thing I married one.
18.) I hate being cold.
17.) After I sit in a relaxing hot bath, I still have to take a shower because I don't feel like I am "clean".
16.) I enjoy watching t.v. Probably too much. Thank GOD for DVR, because now I can watch it on my own time and not have it interfere with anything!
15.) I'm closer to my family now than I have ever been. Sometimes it takes moving out, getting married, and having your own kids to see what your parents REALLY had to go through.
14.) Someday, my sister is going to be rich and famous and we are all going to mooch off of her for the rest of our lives. And I can't wait. (Ok, this one is not about me, but I had to throw it in there to make her smile:o)
13.) I avoid most indoor playgrounds like the plague ie: McDonald's, the mall, etc. Have you ever LOOKED at one of those places? They just ooze with bad smells and germs. Blech!
12.) I hate vacuuming.
11.) I hate putting laundry away. Sometimes, I will just fold it and will have like 10 loads of clean laundry sitting on my spare couch.
10.) There are days I am so busy, I forget to brush my teeth. Thank you LORD for gum!
9.) I LOVE doing theme parties!! Hello, have you SEEN my Lost party pics? Not to mention all my kid's b-day parties are always rich with a theme and a deliciously decorated cake:)
8.) I love naps but rarely can take them. My mind just won't shut off in the middle of the day.
7.) I can and will get violent if any one attempts to mess with or hurt my children. I scare myself sometimes!
6.) I am extremely competitive when it comes to playing games. Again with my violent streak....who knew a simple game of Apples to Apples could become war!
5.) I went to nursing school for one year, 11 years ago and to this day, my family and friends always call me up and ask me medically related questions as if one year of nursing school and some work in the medical field (ie receptionist and medical transcriptionist) actually qualifies me as the "professional".
4.) I have never truly mowed a complete lawn. I ran the lawnmower into our house when I was 15 (long story, no damage), so my dad never let me mow the lawn again. I tried to mow our lawn about two years ago and the lawnmower ran out of gas. Guess it's just not my thing.
3.) My dream job is to take someone shopping, show them the right clothes to buy, dress them up, do their make-up and hair, take some awesome pictures of them, and then serve them a deliciously decorated cake. What would you call a business like that?
2.) I love cake. I cannot and will not go into any more details because I'm a little bitter about what cake does to my mid-section and thighs. Most of you know my obsession.
1.) I secretly want to be a butt-kicking super spy like Sidney Bristow. I guess I will have to settle for kickboxing at "dance club". Gotta get all that aggression out somehow!

What a week....

So this last week has been a full on! There was some good t.v. (LOST BABY!) and some bad (Do I REALLY care what the new president had for lunch? Seriously? And how many times can a couple dance to "At Last". Totally ruined that song for me) Let me give you the run down of major events, as they happened (as if you really care, this is more for me that for you:o)

Friday: Went to Russ's dad's and enjoyed some Monicals pizza whilst giving him a much needed "Grandpa Fix".

Saturday: Spent most of the morning getting my sister ready for the Henry/McLeod wedding, then went to the wedding...by myself...with three kids. (Whoever said being a firefighters wife was easy should be slapped. If there is ever a wedding, sickness, family emergency, it all happens on his shift day!)

Sunday: Church then lunch with my dad before he was back off to Iowa...for only TWO MORE WEEKS. Then I spent the entire night (ENTIRE NIGHT!) with a puking 22-month old. Have YOU ever attempted to make a kid that age puke in a bucket? Yeah, not an easy job.

Monday: I was so tired and honestly don't remember...except that Jack Bauer was awesome.

Tuesday: I babysit for an 18-pound, 4-month old Tuesday-Thursday, so those days are busy with general care of him and Maebree. Tuesday night I hosted our weekly exercise "dance club" with my sister and some good friends. It's basically me attempting to lead a cardio kickboxing/Step/Tae-Bo/Dancing with the Stars/Various other work-out video and Fitness Center classes I've stolen moves from. It's fun, and boy does it burn some calories. It's a very exclusive club though, and there are only two rules to "dance club"..............And it's only hosted on "Russ shift days".

Wednesday: Church, then home for an AWESOME premier of LOST....I'm surprised I've not done a post on this show because I am borderline obsessed. I would post a clip of my favorite scene, but I am obviously NOT technically savvy enough to do that:)

Thursday: Babysat, then as the day went on...began feeling sort of ill. I made a great dinner (Some sort of Asian chicken with cabbage), went to band, left early and went to bed at 8:30.

Friday: Sick....all day....spent it in bed. Don't know what the deal was, but I was so tired I could not keep my eyes open all day. I felt feverish without a fever. Again, Russ's shift day!

Saturday: Felt 100% better, cleaned the house, and enjoyed an evening out with my hubby and a fellow firefighter and his wife. I will not be frequenting Dos Realas any time soon. El Toro all the way baby!

Sunday: Woke up for church after being sick all night from eating Dos Realas, went into my kid's room to wake them up and realized the dog had gotten sick all night. I will spare you the details, but needles to say, I had a big job waiting for me when I came home from church. (OK animal activists, I removed her from the "situation", but couldn't do a major clean until after church as time didn't allow). Then we went to my moms and had an afternoon of food and games for my bro's b-day.

Today, I have to clean, grocery shop, and possibly cut my daughter's mullet. I was going to last night, but my husband decided to torture me with forcing me to cut his hair. *Sigh* I will post pics of the "mullet cutting" later:)

Baby it's cold outside

So.....it's pretty stinkin' cold outside. So cold, there's frost on our windows......

.........on the inside of our windows. Yep...we have frost on the inside of our windows, and our house is five years old. We moved from a house that was like 50 years old and thought "Awesome! we aren't going to have to cover our doors and windows with big 'ol ugly blankets anymore! We are going to have a brand new house with good windows that don't leak and it's constantly going to be warm", and now our house that is a mere five years old is leakier and colder than our over 50-year-old house....and we have ice in the INSIDE of our windows. (FYI, if you click on the picture and you can see it bigger)

Another interesting point; the builder who built our house informed us after we moved in that our house put him over with window sales at this particular company and they were sending him to Hawaii. Maybe I should show him a copy of what the inside of my window looks like. Hawaii sounds pretty nice right now.

The "Christmas Post"....FINALLY!

So here it is, January 9th, and I'm just now posting on Christmas. I'm such a lazy woman these days, I have no excuse. Above is my Christmas tree, the day I took it down. I was so sad Christmas was here and gone, I turned off all my lights and looked at my tree glowing in the quiet of that morning, it was actually kind of peaceful. I love decorating my house and having the warm glow of the lights, I just wanted to savor the last few minutes I had it:o)

Christmas this year was probably the best it has been in the past 3 years, with the exception of a little panic early (and I mean early!) Christmas Eve morning with regards to my dad being lost at the airport (he wasn't, the Wench at LEX Express lied and told us they didn't pick him up when in fact he had gotten on the bus..long story...DON'T use Lex Express!) Bottom line, Dad got here safe and sound, Thank you GOD!

Christmas came, was a blast, and past. Our Christmas Eve traditions went off without any hitches. We did our traditional hanging of the ornaments (Yes, they got their tree the day before Christmas Eve, for $10:o), and Jon got us started with a little American Idol karaoke...

He's such a freak:o) I wish I had video to show, it was pretty funny. Next up was "Charlie Brown's Christmas", my dad's favorite Christmas cartoon because it is the only one that tells the true meaning of Christmas. And yes...Emmy is picking her nose:o)

Next, dad read the Christmas story, and my older girls were really annoyed due to all the action in the room involving Mae, Noah, and Eli. They are a bit young to sit still through an entire story, and the fire in the fireplace looked much more appealing to Noah:)

You can truly read the annoyance on Emmy's face! Mae only cared about the little glass house mom had set out....

The evening was capt off with a not-so-little game of monopoly, debit card style. This game lasted for two straight days before they finally had to end it!

Christmas morning was filled with a free-for-all present unwrapping beginning at our house and being taken over to mom's. I have too many pictures to post of my kids opening all their presents, so I will spare all of you! My sister (or should I say the future Mrs. David Cook) did pose with her favorite present....

He just needs to dump that stinkin' other little AI tramp and she's "In like Flynn"

My favorite moment of Christmas was when my mom and dad opened their present from us kids. I had an idea to give my mom a memory book that I made. Diana and I worked on it for like 2 1/2 months before Christmas, and our goal was simple..."this better make them cry".....

....It did....a lot:) We also all pitched in and got them a new digital camera since mom had to sell theirs at their garage sale when Dad first went to TC to pay some bills. I put a note on it when they opened it that this was to make some "new, good memories".

I think it's working so far:)

So our Christmas was awesome this year. It wasn't about presents or all the commercial "crap" that comes with it. We all were together most of the weekend, and there were no fights or tension that has accompanied the last few Christmas's we have had. It was wonderful.

Next up...Happy New Year...Happy new DIET!

Horrible blogger, horrible week

So I am a horrible blogger lately, yes, this I know. I know many people understand given it's a business time of year and all.

Unfortunately, it has also been a horrible week in the Houston family. Russ's dad's girlfriend passed away on Tuesday afternoon. His dad called us Monday to say she was not doing well (we were supposed to get together for our "Christmas" with him) and had taken a fall the day before. He asked us to postpone our dinner with him, and then called us back later to say they had to rush her to the emergency room because she was showing signs of a stroke. Russ's aunt later called to inform us that they weren't sure she would make it through the night. I had "Yai-Yai" come over and sit with the kids so we could go to the hospital to be with him...she has a rather large and extremely "overwhelming" family. We went up there and sat with Jim and tried to keep his mind off the "madness" surrounding (as much as was possible with about 35 people there all at once!) We went home late and then he called later on Tuesday afternoon to tell us that she had passed. She was only 68 years old and suffered from COPD.

It's a really hard situation. She lived with Russ's dad for years, I think 11 to be exact. My kids considered her another grandma, she was "Mana Dorfey" to them. I remember going out to Russ's dad's with Faith when she was just a toddler and playing with all the farm cats out there, 4 of which are now part of my mom's, grandma's, and aunt's households. No one could tame those 'ol farm cats like her! She was a fiery little woman and loved my girls like they were her own grandgirls. Her health started declining when Emmy was about 3 years old, and it just kept going down from there. She was just not the same person she used to be, she was tired and on oxygen all the time. Yesterday when we were getting ready for the visitation, Faith asked me if this was the part where the family stands around and people shake their hands. I told her yes it was, and she asked "But we are her family, why aren't we going to do that?" Ah....the innocence of childhood, I hope she never grows out of it.

The service was a really good one. I've been to two kinds of funerals, ones with the "typical funeral" scriptures and a message with no truth or substance to it. Then I have been to our churches funerals...where the truth is preached and it usually ends with some sort of alter call. This particular pastor was a family friend, and he did a fabulous job given the circumstances, and at the end he laid out the gospel message in a wonderful way. I was pretty impressed with that.

I hope to have my Christmas pictures uploaded soon so that I can share some of the wonderful times we had this year. It was a great Christmas to be had by all!
